Internal Review
Adults 50+ meeting people online — especially in a new country — are actively targeted by organised fraud. This page is written to help you recognise it early. Please read it before you start talking to anyone.

Scams that target our community
- Romance fraud
- Fast, intense affection followed by a crisis — a hospital bill, a stuck shipment, a frozen account. The emotional build-up exists to make the request feel reasonable.
- Cryptocurrency and investment pitches
- A new friend who mentions trading, mining, or a platform with guaranteed returns, and offers to help you get started. Screenshots of profits are trivially faked.
- Gift cards and untraceable payment
- Requests for gift-card codes, prepaid cards, wire transfers, money-transfer agents, or crypto. These are chosen because they cannot be reversed.
- Advance-fee and customs stories
- You are asked to pay a fee, tax, or duty to release money, a gift, or a parcel supposedly sent to you.
- Fake relocation and property help
- Deposits for apartments, visa help, residency paperwork, or moving services from someone you met here and have never met in person.
- Emergency impersonation
- A message claiming to be a member, a relative, or nu Avanti staff, needing urgent help or payment. Verify through a channel you already trust.
- Sextortion
- Intimate images requested early, then used as leverage. Do not pay; stop replying, keep the evidence, and report it.
- Phishing for your account
- Links or attachments sent in chat that ask you to sign in again or verify your identity. We will not ask for your password.
Warning signs worth pausing on
- Declarations of love or a deep bond within days.
- A refusal to appear on a live video call, or repeated technical excuses.
- Pressure to move to WhatsApp, Telegram, or email straight away.
- A profile that reads as unusually polished, with few specifics you can check.
- Any money conversation, however small the first request.
- Urgency, secrecy, or being told not to discuss it with family.
Simple rules that hold up
- Do not send money, gift cards, crypto, or banking details to anyone you met online — no exceptions, no matter how long you have been talking.
- Do a live video call before meeting in person or sharing anything sensitive.
- Search their photos and phrases online; reused images are common.
- Talk to one person you trust about anyone new. Fraud depends on isolation.
- Keep the conversation on nu Avanti until you are confident.
Meeting in person
- Choose a public place for the first few meetings, and arrange your own transport.
- Tell someone where you are going, who you are meeting, and when you expect to be back.
- Keep your phone charged and your own money and documents with you.
- Watch your drink, and leave whenever you want to. You owe no explanation.
- Do not share your home address, and do not agree to be collected from home.
When you reply to a member's Right Now invitation, nu Avanti shows you a short reminder of these habits before you commit. We record only that you saw it. It is a reminder from us, not a permission slip, and not a promise about the person you are meeting.
You can also read a member's own pages from their name anywhere in nu Avanti — their story, the chapters they say they are living, and what sounds good to them right now. It is written by them. We do not confirm any of it, and reading it is not a substitute for the habits above.
If something has already happened
- Stop contact and keep the messages, profile details, and payment records.
- Contact your bank or payment provider immediately — speed matters for any chance of recovery.
- Report it to the police or the national fraud reporting service where you live.
- Report the member to us so we can act on the account.
Being targeted is not a failure of judgement. These operations are professional and well practised, and telling someone early is what limits the damage.
